Overview

Maid-Rite, nestled at 118 N Pasfield St in Springfield, Illinois, stands as a proud relic of classic American takeout culture. Known chiefly for its loose meat sandwiches, this eatery offers a straightforward, no-frills menu that honors tradition without pretense. The hallmark Maid-Rite sandwich—a moist, seasoned loose meat patty nestled in a soft bun—delivers a nostalgic taste that longtime fans and newcomers alike appreciate for its unassuming yet satisfying flavor.

The simplicity of the menu is part of Maid-Rite’s charm. Alongside the signature sandwich, the menu features hearty fries, including cheese fries, and classic accompaniments like their homemade root beer and RC Cola, poured straight from a soda fountain. These beverage options complement the savory fare and elevate the dining experience with a touch of Americana seldom found in modern establishments.

The atmosphere at Maid-Rite is warm and inviting, reminiscent of an old-school burger joint with a storied past. The unique setting of a converted rail car adds character, while the friendly staff enhance the welcoming vibe. Family-friendly and casual, it’s a spot where locals bring their children and visitors can soak in a slice of Springfield’s culinary history. The portion sizes reflect a sensible American appetite, offering fulfillment without excess.

While some might wish for a few more seasoning options on the fries or a wider drink selection, the overall experience remains authentic and enjoyable. The focus clearly remains on quality, tradition, and community—a space where the past and present meet over simple, flavorful meals. Maid-Rite is more than just a takeout restaurant; it’s a taste of heritage, perfect for those seeking honest food in a relaxed, nostalgic setting.

They have the loose meat sandwiches. Surprisingly, they were really good. Nothing fancy but just a good little sandwich. Wish the fries were a little more seasoned or maybe had season salt out where customers had the option to use it if they choose to. Need more drink options. We would come back.

Maid rite has been a favorite since I was a little girl! I grew up eating Maid Rite in Quincy IL. Absolutely love the Springfield location, especially their rootbeer!

Great experience here. Took our three kiddos in and the place was great. Staff very friendly. Feels like an old school burger joint. Menu is simple. We got one of everything. The samwiches are great, fries good, was impressed w chili and curds. Portions are honestly how Americans should be eating vs. how much they want. Would recommend and willl definitely return. It is worth checking out if you’re in the area vs. eating at a franchise

The food is good, but you're coming here for the atmosphere. The owner (pictured) will happily give you the nickel tour of Maid-Rite's humble beginnings as a converted rail car; the first ever drive-in restaurant; over a century of service and great food served up in unique, comfortable surroundings. Definitely have the homemade root beer!

It's exactly what you'd want out of a Springfield staple. Smooshed, greasy, and crazy flavorful. Plus, it's the only place in town to get RC cola from a soda fountain (and their house root beer).

This has been standard Saturday lunch growing up. And when I went to SHS, this was also lunch some days. This is an institution. The owner is so nice, and you cannot recreate these at home. It's the bun/mustard/pickle combo and the meat is just right. Add a homemade root beer and you are good to go! The fries are good to eat in the car on the drive home, obvi.

We stopped in Springfield during a long road trip and saw there was a Made-Rite and had to stop since we’ve had it before other areas of the country. The food, drinks, and service was wonderful, but what really made my day was the history on the place! I couldn’t believe that this building was one of the original franchises and on the National registry of historical places built in 1924. They also hold the claim as the first drive thru restaurant!
